A signature image is attached to every single email you send, so its size is multiplied by your whole year of correspondence. It also has to survive being displayed at roughly 150–200 pixels wide in most email clients. Both facts point the same way: make it small, deliberately.

The size to aim for

Most signature logos display around 150–200px wide. Export at roughly double that — 300–400px — so it stays sharp on high-density screens, and no larger. Under 50 KB is a reasonable target for the file itself; many good signature logos are under 20 KB.

Pick the right format

A logo with flat colours and text is usually smaller and sharper as a PNG. A photograph is much smaller as a JPG. If your logo needs a transparent background so it sits on any email background colour, it has to be PNG — JPG has no transparency and will fill it with white.
