Resize an Image for a YouTube Thumbnail (1280×720, Free)

YouTube wants 1280×720 and under 2 MB. Here's how to hit both, free, in a browser tab.

YouTube's thumbnail spec is 1280×720 pixels, 16:9, under 2 MB, as JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP. Upload something the wrong shape and YouTube will letterbox or crop it for you, usually badly. Two free browser tools get you to spec without opening anything heavier.

Get the shape right first

1280×720 is 16:9. If your source photo is a phone shot, it is probably 4:3 or 3:4 — nowhere near 16:9. Crop it to the wide ratio first so you choose what gets cut, rather than letting YouTube decide. The cropper has a wide preset for this.

Then resize to exactly 1280×720

Once the shape is 16:9, open the resizer and type 1280 into the width. With the ratio locked, the height lands on 720 by itself. Download and you have a file that matches the spec exactly.

If it's over 2 MB

A 1280×720 PNG can still be several megabytes. Run it through the compressor and drag the quality slider down while watching the live size read-out — at that resolution you can usually get well under 2 MB with no visible difference. JPG is the safer output for a thumbnail; PNG only helps if you have flat graphics or text.
