Resize a Photo to Passport Size (Free, Exact Pixels)

Passport and visa portals want an exact pixel size and often an exact file size. Here's how to hit both for free.

Passport and visa upload portals are unusually strict: a fixed pixel size, a fixed file size range, often a fixed aspect ratio, and an instant rejection if you miss. The requirements differ by country, so the first job is always to read the actual spec on the portal rather than trusting a blog's number — including this one.

Find the two numbers that matter

Almost every portal states a pixel size (for example 600×600, or 413×531) and a file size range (often 20–50 KB, sometimes up to 200 KB). Write both down. Some also specify a head-height percentage, which is a photography requirement rather than something a resizer can fix.

Crop to the right shape, then resize

If the required size is square and your photo is not, crop it square first so you control the framing — resizing a rectangle into a square stretches the face, which is both unflattering and a rejection risk. Once the shape matches, open the resizer, type the exact width, and let the locked ratio fill in the height.

Then hit the file size

Pixel size and file size are separate requirements. With the dimensions correct, run the file through the compressor and slide the quality down until the live read-out lands inside the portal's range. Do it in this order — compressing first and resizing after undoes your work.

What these tools cannot do

They will not judge head height, background colour, expression or lighting against a government standard. If the portal rejects your photo for those reasons, the fix is retaking it, not reprocessing it.
