Every tutorial screenshot has a bit that shouldn't ship: a real customer name, an internal URL, a licence key.

Writing documentation means taking screenshots of a real system, and a real system has real data in it. Customer names, internal hostnames, API keys, ticket numbers, a colleague's avatar β€” none of it belongs in a public help centre, and all of it tends to be in the screenshot you just took.

Blur what's private, keep what's instructive

The value of a screenshot is showing where things are and what they look like. You can obscure a customer name and still show the customer list. Blur the specific values, not the layout β€” if a reader cannot tell which screen they are looking at, you have censored too much.

How to do it

Drop the screenshot in, drag a box over each private value, and adjust the strength. Every box applies at full resolution, so what you see in the preview is what you get in the file. Undo is there if a box lands in the wrong place, and reset starts the image over.

Keep it consistent across a set

If a doc has twelve screenshots, use the same mode and roughly the same strength in all of them. A page where some things are lightly blurred and others are heavily pixelated looks careless, and readers notice the inconsistency more than the censoring.

Better still: use fake data

Where you can, take the screenshot against a demo account with invented names and values. Nothing to censor is always cleaner than something censored β€” and the screenshot stays usable when someone later needs to re-crop it.
