How to Make a Circle Profile Picture (Free, Transparent PNG)

A genuinely round PNG, not a square with a circle drawn on it — which is the difference between a clean avatar and a white box.

Most platforms display a square photo inside a circular mask, so you never need a round file for them. But for anything you place yourself — a byline on your own site, an email signature, a slide, a team page — you need the image to actually be round, with transparency outside the circle. Otherwise the corners show up as a white box.

How to do it

Drop the photo into the cropper and pick the Circle option. It crops to a round image with a transparent PNG background, which means it sits cleanly on any colour behind it. Download and you are done.

Centre the face with room to spare

The circle cuts the corners off the square, so anything near an edge disappears. Leave visible space around the head. A portrait that looks well-framed as a square often loses the top of the head or an ear once it is round.

It has to stay a PNG

Transparency only survives in PNG or WEBP. If you convert your circle to JPG, the transparent corners become solid white and you are back to the box you were avoiding. Keep it PNG for placement; convert only if the destination demands it.
