How to Crop a Photo to a Perfect Square (Free)

Cropping to a square keeps your photo's proportions. Resizing to a square squashes them. People mix these up constantly.

Square is the default shape for feed posts, album art, avatars and product grids, and almost no camera shoots it. Turning a rectangle into a square is a one-tap job — as long as you crop rather than resize.

Crop, don't resize

Cropping to 1:1 keeps a square region of the photo and discards the rest, so everything that remains has its true proportions. Resizing a rectangle to equal width and height squashes the whole image into the square — faces get wide or narrow and it looks subtly wrong in a way people notice without identifying why.

How to do it

Drop the photo into the cropper and choose Square (1:1). Position the crop over the part you want to keep and apply. Download — no watermark, no account.

Watch the edges

On a portrait photo, a square crop takes a big bite out of the top and bottom; on a landscape, from the sides. Check that nothing important — the top of someone's head, a hand, the edge of a product — is being clipped. If it is, reframe rather than settling.

Then resize if a platform wants a specific size

Once it is square, resizing to an exact pixel size like 1080×1080 is safe, because the shape already matches. Crop for shape, resize for pixels — in that order.
